Carroll County was named after a former governor of Tennessee, William Carroll. His popularity was second only to another popular Tennessee governor, Andrew Jackson, who went on to become the 7th President of the United States.
The town of Huntingdon is the county seat of Carroll County. Its site was determined by commissioners appointed by Governor Carroll in 1822.
It is located in Western Tennessee and is served by U.S. 70 and Tennessee 22. Interstate 40 is only 15 miles away.
The famed David Crockett, better known as Davy, was among the first settlers in this area. He was a signatory on the original town deed and traded his famous coon-skins in Huntingdon. He was elected to serve three terms in the U.S.Congress from the new Tennessee territory.
Other well-known persons from this area are Mrs. Neill Wright, a spokesperson for concerns of women in the 1920's and her sister, Maye Allison, a popular silent film star in the early 1900's.
Huntingdon was also the home of Dixie Carter, well-known film and television star.
Two lawyers from Huntingdon, Alvin Hawkins and Gordon Browning, went on to become governors of Tennessee.
The H.I.S. factory in nearby Bruceton manufactures the well known "Chic" brand of jeans and clothing.
Some of Tennessee's unique homes dating back 150 years are located in Huntingdon.
Huntingdon hosts annually the Carroll County Fair in late August and the Heritage Festival in late September.
