OUR TOWN USA MAYFIELD, KY

Mayfield, Kentucky is located on the
national highway U. S. 45 in southwestern Kentucky not far from the Tennessee-Kentucky border.

It is in the heart of what is known as the Purchase Area. The Purchase Parkway is a thorofare which runs on the northern and eastern border of the town.

The Purchase Area gets its name from the fact that Andrew Jackson authorized the federal government to purchase land from the Chickasaw Indians from the Tennessee River to the Mississippi River. The land became known as the Jackson Purchase.

Graves County was founded in the middle of the Purchase Area and the community of Mayfield sprung up.

The town of Mayfield is home to the General Tire and Rubber Company which has its largest tire manufacturing facility located here.

Ingersoll Rand has chosen Mayfield as its world headquarters for its Centac Division.

The raising of tobacco is also one of the community's major industries.

Antique and folk art dealers gather annually on the third Saturday in September for the Mayfield Antique and Folk Art Festival on South 7th Street from College to Walnut.

The annual Christmas parade is held the first Saturday in December.Kicking off the Christmas season, local businesses have open house the second Sunday of November.

A district fair is held in June at the Mayfield-Graves County Fairgrounds.

Purchase Players, a local community theater group, presents six productions a year in the historic Legion Theater just off the court square.

At nearby Fancy Farm, an annual picnic is held which is in the Guiness Book of Records as the world's largest. The picnic is held the first weekend in August.

In an effort to rebuild the downtown, Mayfield had been accepted in the "Main Street Program." The goal of Main Street is to assist in the resurgence of the downtown area. That program is now under the direction of Deborah Gamblin.
