These highlights of Our Town-Murray, Ky. are taken in part from material provided by the Murray-Calloway County Chamber of Commerce.
Murray is the county seat of Calloway County, Ky. It is located on the national highway U. S. 641 in Western Kentucky, just a few miles from the Kentucky-Tennessee state line.
It is the home of Murray State University, whose basketball team has advanced several times to the NCAA Basketball Tourney held in March.
Murray State University also houses the National Scouting Museum. On display there is approximately 50 paintings by the well-known illustrator Norman Rockwell, whose paintings often graced the cover of Boys' Life, a magazine of the Boy Scouts of America.
Right here in our backdoor is the Land Between the Lakes, situated between Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley. Murray, like many towns, has its own annual celebration. It is the "Freedom Fest," several days of festivities centering around the Fourth of July.
Two of the major industries here are Briggs and Stratton, which makes small engines and Fisher-Price which makes toys. There are over a dozen smaller companies located in our community.
The Murray-Calloway County Community Theater's Playhouse in the Park is one of the oldest community theaters in the state. It is housed in the 1907 L&N Freight Depot which was moved to the county park.
The inventor of radio, Nathan B. Stubblefield, was a native of Calloway County. The first demonstration of radio was held on the courthouse square in Murray in 1902.
Murray and Calloway County is a Rand McNally top-rated retirement community.
